History of The Portland Bunkhouse

(formally: The Royal Navy Transmitter Station).

In April 1904 the Marconi Transmitter Station as it was known was moved from the grounds near the lighthouse to the current location of the Portland Bunkhouse. The Transmitter Station’s call sign was known as TWQ.

By the 1960’s the Transmitter Station was known as the RN Portland Bill W/T Station. At this point there were 8 High Frequency Transmitters (believed to be Marconi) on site and one massive high power transmitter which was rarely used.

The Royal Navy had a permanent watch of 3 men and also technicians would come up from the Osprey between 09:00-16:00 Monday-Friday.

In 2008 the building was taken over by a local dive operator for storage and occasional overnight accommodation for divers.

In 2019 the current owners Ali and Richie bought the business and now run the Portland Bunkhouse Ltd with their small family team.

Nice and quiet and welcoming hosts. There’s everything here you could possibly want and more. Much better than the B&Bs I’m used to staying in. I’ve stayed in the bunkhouse in Weymouth more than a few times but in comparison this one tops it. I have family here so stay several times a year and I will now always try and stay here. Thank you so much and looking forward to seeing you both very soon. Lou

Great place to stay in Portland, especially for climbing! Fully stocked kitchen is very useful.

This is a great location if you are going climbing or visting the area. The owners are working really hard to improve the old Bunkhouse and have updated the showers and they are good. The kitchen works well and has everything you need to cook an ace Thai green curry for a party of 8. We are thinking of going back to go coasteering in the summer.

The bunkhouse is in a great location! It’s a short walk to the lighthouse and it’s not far from lots of great climbing. The facilities were clean and there was everything we needed for our short stay. We would definitely recommend for anyone that’s looking for a place to stay on a climbing/walking/activity break in Portland!

The owners were also super helpful when I left my earphones behind and got them posted back to me quickly! Thank you again 🙂
